Girls' Sand Sprint, Coogee Beach Surf Carnival

By GavMc
Surf Carnivals are a big part of Australian Beach Culture. I was lucky to be in Sydney on the 100th anniversary of Coogee Beach’s first carnival, for which they laid on a spectacular 2007 version, excerpts from which I will be posting over the next week or so.

This action shot was taken from the girls’ sand sprint, an event geared to training and testing surf lifesaver’s ability to quickly run to the water to undertake a rescue.

I like the image for the explosive ‘out the blocks’ action, and the repeated shapes of the different girls in their different club colours.

I cleaned the image up with contrasts and an unsharp mask, and then blurred all but the closest girl via the layers command. As part of the unblurring I included the sand she’s kicking up, and her shadow, essentials I missed in my first go. Although there is some fine detail from the other girls I found it all a bit busy, and so have tried to enhance the overall impact by only having her up sharp.

I added a border, accented red from her swimsuit, with a white frame – I just can’t seem to resist borders these days!

This is a fine action shot Gav. YOur description of the PS work is interesting but more to the point, effective in the picture. John
