A Crescent Butterfly (Phycides tharus) (best viewed large)

Indigenous to North nd Central America.
The Crescent is a relatively small butterfly, with an average wingspan of about 1.5 inches (approximately 3.8 cm).
Its preferred habitat is open areas such as pastures, road edges, vacant lots, fields, open pine woods
Adults find nectar from a great variety of flowers including dogbane, swamp milkweed, shepherd's needle, asters, and winter cress.
Males patrol open areas for females.
*This one was taken in my backyard, near the brook I have on the rear boundary.
