A Fritillary (Spegena cybele) (best viewed large)

Indigenous to North America and parts of Europe.
There are fourteen greater (larger) fritillaries and sixteen lesser (smaller) fritillaries, which can be very difficult to tell apart.
The caterpillars feed on violets almost exclusively.
After breeding, the females go into diapause (a several week nap) and then emerge and lay their eggs near patches of violets.
(There is a saying that without violets, there would be no fritillaries.)
