Days past - a working river

By GeorgeP
Singapore River ~ 1963..This is a scan of a slide taken around 1963. I was fortunate to spend my final three years of high school in Singapore. There, I discovered girls, independence from parents, and Tiger beer. Those three years made an indelible impression - something akin to what Kipling captured in his poem:..

An' I'm learnin' 'ere in London what the ten-year soldier tells.
"If you've 'eard the East a-callin', you won't never 'eed naught else."
No! you won't 'eed nothin' else.
But them spicy garlic smells,.
An' the sunshine an' the palm-trees an' the tinkly temple-bells;

I've returned to Singapore several times over the years and been amazed at the way this small island has changed and continues to change. Yet some things are constant - the climate, the variety of wonderful tasty food, the friendly industrious people and Tiger beer.

It must be age but I don't recall the heat as a big problem when I was a kid. Very few places were air conditioneded and most busses and cars managed with only the breeze coming through the windows. On my last visit the heat was noticeable. Perhaps because memory is selective rather than a change in the climate?

I take no credit . . . probably a result of the dyes in the slide fading over the past 50 years! In keeping, the smells of the river have also faded in my memory.

In the land of fine jewelry and finest tailored suits, this image is full of interest and suggests a touch of high key. TG

Yes George, your observation is so enlightening, the river quays of Singapore will never change, it is part of their heritage & you can see the riverside restaurants & foodstalls on your picture, the very same location as they are today! ee Smile
