Long ago and far away

By GeorgeP
In 1975 I took a job in southern Iran and moved with my family from Surrey to the town of Ahvaz in the oil fields of Khuzestan. This photo was taken not too far away near Agha Jari. Forty-plus years later, my children still have very happy memories of that time and we all continue to miss the beauty of that desert landscape.

Photograph of an old slide, displayed using a slightly younger Bell & Howell slide projector.

Thanks for the comment Jennifer. I suspect that many in our country have a similar opinion. For me, and my family, it is a country steeped in history, with beautiful cities, and friendly hospitable people. I accept that their politicians and ours can't agree on anything - and refuse to make even the slightest welcoming gesture towards each other, but I know that hasn't changed the heart of the average person. Yes, memories are tinted with rose-coloured glasses, but I still hope to return and retrace steps and friendships before I get too old.
This is a Superb image and in my view timeless.

Beautiful photo, George. Many people forget that Iran is Persia....along with China, probably the oldest continuous culture in the world. And a nation of poets. Rumi came from Persia. And a very educated country. And, in 1975, still under the oppressive regime of the Shah, who had been stalled by the American CIA after the overthrow in the early 1950s of President Mosadek (I am sure I have spelled it wrong), which ultimately led to the overthrow of the hated Shah and his Savak secret police and the rise of the Islamic Republic.

And, I hear it is a really beautiful country.
