The Taj Mahal

By Geraint
Well, arrived back last night from a 6-week trip through India. Had a great (but challenging time), and just starting to wade through the many photos. I thought I'd start the uploads with the most famous of all of India's landmarks - The Taj Mahal. This was taken at sunrise, and I was lucky to catch the remnants of the mist - about 30seconds later it had all been burnt away by the rising sun. I wanted to include a bit of human interest in it, and I wish the man was slightly more to the left of frame, but I was too late in pressing the shutter! I used Lee 0.9 and 0.3 ND grads angled over the sun to help with the exposure. The experience of watching the sun rise over the Taj Mahal was amazing, and impossible really to do it justice with a photo. I hope I've gone some ways in capturing the atmosphere...

I've included the original shot (perspective adjusted because of the extreme wide angle of the 10mm); the same with a warming filter in CS3; and a b&w version, which I quite like. All thoughts and critique welcome!

That's so beautiful, prefer V2 slightly more for the warmer colours.

Wonderful images indeed.V2 my favourite. The inclusion of the lone figure gives a sense of scale to the images.
Well taken.

I think I would have been tempted to correct the slightly converging verticals in Photoshop (especially the tower on the left seems to lean quite a bit in this image), but I can't help but really like this image anyway. Not only does it have a wonderful atmosphere and lovely soft tones, but your inclusion of that figure gives it something extra.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Conrad - I already applied quite a bit of manipulation with the perspective tool in Photoshop (because of the heavy distortion with the wide angle lens); anything more and it looked a bit weird to my eye - the towers looked too 'fat' if you know what I mean. But it might be an idea to adjust it more as you suggest and come back to it tomorrow - it might not look so weird then. Thanks.

well the wide angle. I managed to get one at this early hour. The mist gives it a magical appearance. As you say, difficult to do this place justice
