Herclues & Nessus

By ghibby
It’s been a long time since I last posted an image here, life has just got in the way and I’ve not had enough time to do much creative photography this year.

This was taken on a recent break to Tuscany, Florence was the last stop before heading home. I spent quite some time shooting various sculptures in the Loggia di Signoria in the Piazza della Signoria. This is the stunning Hercules slaying Nessus by Giambologna and was sculpted in 1599.

The shading from the direct sun provided by the building allowed me to shoot some quite subtle and tonally descriptive images around noon which fitted very nicely with finding shade in the intense heat too! I have a series of images of the various sculptures and decided to process them all as B&W images and treated with a warm / cool split tone reminiscent of the Lith process. I have applied a heavy vignette to further isolate the subject from it surroundings. I processed the image to bring out as much texture and tone in the muscular figures as possible and added a touch of grain to bring the image further in line with the ‘Lith look’. All processing is done in Adobe Lightroom 3.

Exposure 1/80sec @ F5.6 ISO 100 and 70mm Focal length
