Icy Dawn 1

By ghibby
Shot in Iceland where I have been for the past 10 days or so. This is beautiful glacial lagoon of Jökulsárlón on the south east coast of the island. The lake only formed due to the retreating glacier in the late 1930’s. I got up before sunrise and drove 75km or so to see this place for the first time. The weather was just perfect for this location, calm and little misty with quite soft and cool blue tinged light beginning to emerge. The reflections were perfect across the lagoon. This was among the earliest images I exposed here and the light was at its best around this time. The icebergs were so varied in colour from deep turquoise and blue to pure white and sediment saturated black. Some were the size of your hand while others were as large as cathedrals. This has to be one of the most spectacular places I have ever visited and certainly one of the most memorable dawn’s I have photographed. This was shot from the shore of the lake. These particular icebergs were a fair way from the shore where the lake is very deep with a bed is of dark stone and sediment, the early light has made this look almost like a black mirror.

Not much work to process these images, the scene was not very contrasty so very easy to shoot, no filters required. The RAW file needed some work on the curves and black level to bring out the colours and form of the ice as they looked very flat on screen compared to the scene in front of my eyes. The saturation has not been boosted but I have boosted the vibrancy to level 9 to make the ice stand out and give the image some real bite. . I have also applied a 1.5 stop ND grad in camera raw to the sky the balance the image.

Exposure 1/6 sec @ F10 ISO 100 and 65mm focal length.

Great capture! I have been in Iceland last July this year. It was my best trip in my life! I keep uploading images from many different places and I still got plenty. Jorkulsarlon was very beautiful at night but during the day time it was too bright, no clouds like here...

Beautiful photo Ben, I'm looking forward to more Iceland shots in the near future. The (almost) colourless sky and lake set the blues of the ice off really well and the tranquility of the photo is captivating. Great shot.
