Towards the Light

By ghibby
Shot this weekend at Ashridge estate in Hertfordshire. This location has become a bit of an yearly pilgrimage for me.

This year has been truly spectacular with the cover of young green leaves and bluebells being in perfect harmony with each other. This coupled with lovely direct sunlight over the weekend has provided me with some great images.

Little has been done to this, handheld shot with a wide aperture to throw the foreground and background out of focus and create a nice glow in the image. I added a little bit of a vignette in RAW and a little local contrast adjustment to bring out some detail in the shadows of the tree trunks.

Exposure 1/160s @ F2.5

Lovely colours. I like the trees very upright and regimented on the carpet of blue bells. Plus the one fallen tree trunk lying at the opposite angle just showing through the carpet.

I've been trying to get a superb Bluebell shot for 2 years now and failed miserably, this is what I'm looking for Smile Excellent shot.

After everything I (and others) have been saying about not being able to capture the impact of what we can see with our eyes - you have done it. This is a stunning shot.

I was there yesterday morning - early morning! Which of the 12 or so photographers were you Smile Nice shot, though for my taste perhaps there is a bit too much shading on the canopy of trees? A small niggle.
It was good on Sunday, though I found the sunlight too bright thus making the bluebells rather more purple than blue. Apparently the light can be better (bluer) in the evening.
I was shooting film so won’t be posting my bluebell attempts just yet…! Adam

Hi Adam, this was shot on Saturday evening. I have found that evening light is best in this location. The sun sets in a clearing and so produces these long shadows right up till it dips below the horizon. In the morning the sun only hits the woods when it is higher in the sky. As a result the morning shadows are not as long and the whole scene is less dramatic than evening. Better than that you dont have to get up early!
