Good portrait with a good relaxed pose. The exposure and overall lighting are very flattering.
I have to agree about the background too, although I did try burning it in in PS and it wasn't too bad then. Maybe bring your subject further forward to reduce exposure on the backdrop. Mel's mum got me 10m of black velvet from Leeds market for a tenner.
I don't know if you resharpen your shots after scanning but you will find that they generally need a bit.

Radius 0.3 pixels
Threshold 0 levels
You will notice a big difference.

Hi Ian, You really caught something of her character in this one - harder than just making dolly birds look nice! I hardly noticed the backdrop behind her dazzling smile but you are right, a choice of backgrounds is very useful. Glad to hear you got your own studio up and running, it is a godsend for portrait work. I live in a small bungalow - trying to persuade my wife re a move to somewhere bigger!
