Pauline

By ginz04
This is a picture of my partner Pauline who has helped a lot with the decorating etc of the studio. This is her first picture in my studio - just messing around. I think the backdrop is a bit too much so will need to think about getting some new ones. So off to abercan to see what I can get.

Nice shot Ian - looking pleased with life !

I see your backdrop too in all it's glory - I need something like that myself though I suspect I'll take the short cut and by some sort of abstact patterned material - If I can find it

thank you both - Dave this is a dust cover its about 20' long and 10' wide - dyed it in brown dye and then car paint sprayed it in different colours. You can get these dust covers in black or white.

nice style, a bit more reflection on the off side and you have it, just to lose the shirt shadow a little, dont worry about the back drop, only you know its home made

well captured she seems very very very comfortable posing with you. what you were doing before you click the shutter?

i would suggest to make the background a little shallower to give more depth on subject.

great shot as usual ian.

This is a really good portrait Ian, but I have to be honest and say that I really don't like that backdrop! (I think I've mentioned this before). However, it's only personal choice.

thanx mel when this backdrop ia as it should be ie blurred it gives a very good effect which works well - but it is too in focus..

Good portrait with a good relaxed pose. The exposure and overall lighting are very flattering.

I have to agree about the background too, although I did try burning it in in PS and it wasn't too bad then. Maybe bring your subject further forward to reduce exposure on the backdrop. Mel's mum got me 10m of black velvet from Leeds market for a tenner.

I don't know if you resharpen your shots after scanning but you will find that they generally need a bit.

For this image, try:

Unsharp Mask

Amount 180%
Radius 0.3 pixels
Threshold 0 levels

You will notice a big difference.

Hi Rab - if I got her further away from back drop she wpould be sitting on the camera she is literally about 2' away from tripod foot.

But I am intending getting some different back drops am intending going to Abercans in Liverpool 2morrow.

Thanx for comments always appreciated.

Hi Ian, You really caught something of her character in this one - harder than just making dolly birds look nice! I hardly noticed the backdrop behind her dazzling smile but you are right, a choice of backgrounds is very useful. Glad to hear you got your own studio up and running, it is a godsend for portrait work. I live in a small bungalow - trying to persuade my wife re a move to somewhere bigger!
All the best, Gordon.
