Graham, could you please tell me how you are able to use an IR filter with a digital compact? I want to do the same, although I have a different make and model (Olympus mju 700). Do you hold one in front of the lens, or do you use some kind of system that you can buy?

The Nikon Coolpix 800 has a filter thread, so I use a Hoya screw in infrared filter.

Oh, that's very handy for you - but I was hoping there was another, generic trick. Never mind, I'll try something else. Thanks!
