On converters in general a 1.4 discards 50% of the information captured by a lens, and a 2x discards 75% so there are some quality reductions - but not as much as throwin... -

My advice is to get rid of the D200 - mine was dreadful in challenging light. Up the ISO and there was far too much grain compared with the D300, and dare I say it - film... -
