Crummock Water

By gregl
I have always been a big fan of B&W going back (a long way) to the days of a small dark room in my youth. Looking back now I realise I was never much good at producing credible B&W images.

I知 not sure I am much better at it now, but at least there is no chemical smell and mess with Photoshop! Anyway, here is a shot I took during a walk in Cumbria that I decided to try in mono.

Comments or suggestions will be most welcome as I am trying to work through the techniques for conversion to a B&W image in the software.

f9, 1/50sec, 24mm, ISO 100

Thanks for taking the time to look.

Greg

love the composition very well taken.
Black and white suits this well, but for me the highlights are a tad too bright (IMHO)

I'm in the same mind, I seem to always prefer a mono version of most images. As with this one, the treatment adds to the image.

not sure this one does it for me...composition is good, but I find the mountains too dark and the horizon becomes a little indistinct at the end of the lake

Hi Greg, excellent work, wonderful composition and such, however imho it would stand very well as pen and ink drawing, it is void of any tones and textures and the elusive greyscale, but I would have it on my dining room wall anytime.

It's'a well composed scene Greg with good perspective. I think the contrast may be a little harsh and would suggest pulling back the highlights to show more cloud detail and push the shadow light up for more rock detail. It should help balance the image.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comments and offer suggestions. I managed to open the shadows and tried to pull the highlights back a bit and reloaded as V2. Hopefully it looks a bit better.
