On the same lake as yesterday's photo....to get to the lake, we flew to Puerto Maldonado, on the Madre De Dios River (new the center of a great deal of very destructive gold mining), then a 5 km walk to get to the large canoes to take us to the eco lodge on the lake. The Peruvian government, in an effort to prevent the denuding of the rainforest for agriculture, makes a deal, here, with the family that owns the land on the lake, that they will do no more farming than for their own needs, and sell none of their crops. In exchange, they receive 49% ownership of the lodge. The lodge is totally off the grid; they run their generator maybe 4-5 hours a day. Everything, fuel, food, etc., must be carried in, and all waste and trash carried out. And, the food was terrific, and the guides very knowledgable. For the kids, the rainforest was the highlight of two weeks in Peru.
