Torre das Milagres

By HarrietH
The house has a story, it was built in the late 19th or early 20th century by a wealthy family who had a child who was said to be dying of tuberculosis(as quite often happened). A doctor told them to take the child near the sea to see if it would recover its health. They built this very large house with a tower and took the child there and he/she was cured. They call this house Casa de Torre das Milagres. The Tower of Miracles.
A nice story but now it is being left to fall down and perhaps has a developer waiting just for this as it is situated on a very large block of land right in front of the ocean.

I have repeated the story as perhaps it was missed when I posted the graffiti painted boarded up gate. In V1 the gate belongs to the house next door and not the Tower. V2 and V3 are more views of the actual house.

What a shame to allow this beautiful home to deteriorate, Maureen. The gardens look in good order, let's hope someone will buy it and restore it to its original beauty. Three fine captures. Carol

The gardens you can see Carol are next door, all wealthy people along that part of the sea front. The Tower must have had gardens as fine or finer in its heyday. There are ruined tennis courts and a swimming pool. It must have been wonderful at one time. The King of Portugal (he was assassinated in the early 19th century) loved this region and spent summer in Cascais, his children played with the fisher folk's children and the people of the court wanted to be near him and his family so built mansions all along the sea front. At that time Cascais was of difficult access but all that has changed now, the King has gone and some of the houses are now hotels.

A lovely story and with the name I'd like to think it was true.
A real pity if left to deteriorate - now it needs another miracle.

The house seems still fine from this set of the picture, apart from empty and need a bit work done.. it is really a shame to see it fall apart.
