Unmistakably a kingfisher in every way although the plumage is so different to our own native species, Herman.
Those in Australia are also quite different plumaged too.
A nice shot of this one and I wonder too at the cause of the loss of colour in the beak.
Perhaps a wee bit more room on the left side of the frame for it to look into would have been in order.
But a minor quibble but perhaps worth noting if one was thinking of entering it in a competition.
There will be experts on site I'm sure you will know the reason for the anomaly, if that it is, in the beak.
Ronnie.

A pretty bird, and captured well, Herman. I agree, a tad more space in front of him would be beneficial.

What a stunning detailed close up Herman and some great colour, yes it's a bit tight in the crop but that's ok.

Excellent image of this interesting Kingfisher, the pose, head angle and eye contact are all good. If possible, like Ronnie, I would be inclined compositionally to put some space to the left hand side for it to look into, a tighter crop at the tail end than the head end tends to work well for birds in most instances, I find.

Well... so this is a SA kingfisher! Looks quite different to ours. First I thought he just finished his meal and still has to clean his beak. But he's losing colour? Weird.
Beautiful image, thanks for sharing.

Lovely bird. I initially thought it might be sand on his beak, but you can see around the edges that there is colour loss. Well I guess we all fade with age!

I see that your kingfishers are somewhat different from our ones....
A very good portrait, Herman!Smile ... and he also sits on the thorns!Wink

A really splendid shot of this gorgeous bird.
It looks to me as though he has been eating something messy with that beak and hasn't yet cleaned it.
(Your shot is so good that the discolouration looks lumpy on his beak)
