The Night Sky Above

By heyitshenry
Hello there,
I have been out this evening (Over in New Zealand Tongue) and The light was just amazing with a super bright moon (3/4 not full) mist and no clouds, though not too many stars. This is one of the Best ones i got, i shall post more in my portfolio if you would like to have a look. Anything you would change light and colour wise?

Theres a technique to night shots that you can develop and improve over time.

Focus is important; MANUALLY focus on the stars, get them as sharp as possible, and disable Auto Focus. It will not be focused on infinity, but somewhere short of the infinity mark on the lens.

Turn off VR if the lens has the function.

Use a very solid tripod.

Use either a remote shutter release, or, the 10 second timer, - thats so the camera is not vibrating due to being touched.

Use a shutter time of less than 30 seconds, - experiment, and try 25 seconds. This can ensure you done see movement trails in the stars.

I'll second all Willie's advice, and add that the exposure is very much a variable. You can expose a little less to get the sky darker - my tendency would be to get the background close to black, at least in places, or deep blue/purple, if you are shooting soon after sunset.

Why is this one of the best shots from yoru evening? You can post other versions as you own modifications of this image.

I thought that the composition and light on the building looked quite good with the stars. I have not changed the settings of the photo at all though, i may try and see how it goes.
