A PORTRAIT IN THE MANNER OF PHOTOGRAPHER ....JANE BOWN

By hobbo
Photographer Jane Bown worked for the Observer Newspaper and Magazine circa 1950s-1970s...very well known for her distinctive Black and White portraits of almost anyone of significance.

Compared to her contemporaries she was a small very quiet, rather shy character, who developed a way of using ambient light only to capture her subjects, no matter where they were at the time.
She used just two cameras over those years...a battered OM1 and a Rollieflex... (needs checking ) .her portraits are stunning.
I have her book.....EXPOSURES....I treasure it for sheer quality of production, as much as itís contents.
One very interesting point, she had her camera set to A 2.8- F125 her default setting, adjusted to suit available light.

Her work is well worth looking up.

This portrait was taken using her methods.

A great mono portrait.
Lovely shot ... very much Jane Bown

I met her once at The Observer offices ... but that's a whole other story

Spent a pleasant hour while she let me rifle through a drawer full of her black and white prints of so many famous people

(Incidentally that was in 1989 and she was still going strong then)

There is a great documentary on YouTube of an old BBC Omnibus programme called Five Photos of Jilly Johnson

Jane is one of the five photographers

Worth catching if you haven't seen it

Hi, Colin,

Thank you so much for that..... I have watched the video and thought that Jane Bown made the best effort with her more, direct approach.... she captured the ...Person..... not an act.....

You have also cost me money.... I watched the latest David Bailey interview ....I went straight to Amazon to buy his autobiography.... LOOK AGAIN ....

This is shat this Forum is all about, for me.

I loved her work. And the fact that she only worked with natural light. It gave a real life quality to the pictures.
This is such a beautiful image too

My recollection is that Jane Bown used a Rolleiflex and then an Olympus. Not proof, but it suggests that we're both right. Carried in a shopping bag, I believe.

I have a feeling, too, that she only took one or two rolls of film, and preferred to shoot quietly while a journalist did an interview: filling the whole space - as she did in that Arena programme photographing Jilly Johnson - wasn't her natural territory.
Super portrait - excellent composition GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin
