Location, the ancient city of Khiva south western Uzbekistan. A film shoot was in progress - crew and extras, horses and equipment milled around with film stars and curiosity-fueled onlookers. I watched as the main characters were put through their lines and actions repeatedly, captured the pictures I wanted, and then wandered off to the perimeter of the plaza in which all this movie mayhem was taking place.
There I found two little girls who had also tired of these going-on, so they were concentrating on something much closer and far more interesting: painting their toenails. So intent were they on what they were doing, they ignored me and the camera. I grabbed one shot, and then moved in preparation for another from a different angle.
But at that moment a little fellow I had not noticed up until then decided he wanted to get in on this filming/photography act too. So he photo bombed my shoot.
What or who he imagined himself to be I have no idea - but this was the pose he struck right in front of my unsuspecting camera. Another grab shot, followed by another, but more serious look that I find hard to interpret.
Grandfather was not far away, with the remainder of his young family, and although language was an obstacle, I let him know that I thought he had a fine family. I think he got the message.
Uzbeks are not camera shy.
