Bad weather in the Dolomites

By hrsimages
The forecast was good for most of the day but I noted that quite some rain was predicted from late afternoon. With an early morning start I figured there would be enough time to hike up onto a nearby mountain summit at around 3000 metres and get back down in safety. It all worked out well for the ascent and there were great views from up on high but I could see that clouds were moving in. It was tempting to stay high and enjoy photographing the extensive views so instead of retracing my direct ascent route I took a more winding trail along a flat ridge. Now as I entered the final couple of hours of gentle descent over pristine alpine meadow dark menacing clouds obscured the high summit where I had been just a couple of hours ago. I hurried on and just got back to my accommodation before an enormous cloudburst arrived. Very happy not to have been caught out in that but I did stop for a few minutes to capture the mood.
