The American fountain situated in Rother Street, Stratford upon Avon, is also known as the Shakespeare’s Memorial Fountain and was erected in his memory and dedicated by the actor Henry Irving. It is a favourite focal point in the town’s marketplace, and its creation brought together an unlikely mixture of people. It was intended as a tribute to Queen Victoria, to Shakespeare and to the relationship between the USA and England. The fountain itself is heavily decorated with quotations and sculptural details which enforce these messages.
