Treading The Rice Path

By hwatt
Tirtaganga, Bali, S.E. Asia

I had a request for this old picture taken in 1998 on Fuji Provia 100 with an old Contax ST and 200mm lens I re-scanned it. It still resonates with me so I hope you'll like it too.

I have had the good fortune to see the rice terraces of Nepal and the onion field terraces of the Dieng Plateau. It was therefore quite a surprise to find that I found the rice terraces at Tirtaganga in Bali equally engaging and even more so when I saw this sole red clad Balinese figure complete with laden basket treading the rice path between the wet fields. Even though the speck of red worn by the person is very small it shows up incredibly well against the green of the immature rice plants.

How many tons of rice did the people who constructed these paddy fields eat? Amazing engineering with such crude and primitive tools and equipment. I like the flowing forms of the walls, how they curve and wind across the image, just like 3D contour lines, splendid, thanks for posting.
