Slippery Customer

By Ian-Jones
if you regularly take pictures of aircraft you'll learn to dread some types of display or display aircraft. Some pilots are so keen to demonstrate how fast or manouverable their plane it's almost impossible to get a bead on them, others don't want to make top side passes, some forget that appearing out of the sun is a classic dog fight manouvre designed to make them invisible, or that leaving heavy smoke trails mean they'll be flying through impenetrable fog on the next pass.

Then there are the miniscule ones which perform aerobatics three miles away, the grey camouflaged aircraft which fade into the background in bad weather, and finally, my own bęte noire, the highly polished metal ones which have conspired to confuse the autofocus of every camera body I've used. So, imagine my surprise, when I managed to get one or two OK pics of The Fighter Collection's T20 Hawker Sea Fury at La Ferté-Alais airshow last weekend.

I must have been down to the large number yellow bits, matt exhaust stains, and the fact that the pilot, god bless him, loved doing top side passes. Wink

A lovely image of a stunningly beautiful brute of a plane. I last saw one of these flying at Duxford over forty years ago; I seem to recall that its huge radial engine made a wonderful, almost musical sound characterised by an underlying whistle. I entirely sympathise with your comments; I have been known to utter a few very mild profanities (!?!) on those occasions when the autofocus has developed a mind of its own. I like all of the versions, especially the lead and version 2 which captures the plane at a dramatic angle. Smile Smile

I agree with ll your comments. Even if not photographing the display the scenarios you describe don't make for good viewing at all.
