I like the composition, with the cross dominant in the foreground. The sky really doesn't work though, the colour looks totally artificial against the natural tones of the rest of the shot. The tree branches also show halos from the original background.
Rather than playing with the sky how about turning the original shot into b&w and giving it strong contrasts, I think that would work.

Hi Ian. Whichever software you use should have a contrast adjuster and/or a curves tool. The contrast adjuster may be on the same screen as the brightness adjuster and they are both likely to be sliders. Simply move the slider to the right until you get the contrast you want, then adjust the brightness slightly if necessary.
If you are feeling brave enough to use the curves tool you can get much finer control. There are threads on this site about using curves and there is an excellent short tutorial on Luminous Landscapes.
