Wow the spec's are looking good and with ISO to 409600 and ev-6 this looks good in low light.

What really was a big push back on sony before was its menu system, now, with touch screen, they have completely redesigned the A7S IIIís menu system - apparently making it more logical and now it looking like one of the best menu systems around - would love to hear an ePhotozine review on this.

Are canon and sony head to head and fighting it out on the 4k video scene?

Nikon had always been excellent at reaching out through training and customer support, i've very much enjoyed courses there.
I can also see the great opportunity to more easily support the whole country through online and recorded training and also hope they can utilise local ambassadors or pro photographers to run regional gatherings for the experience of learning direct from an established Nikon expert - many of the modelling sites already promote masterclasses in different photographic areas. Perhaps Nikon could offer 25% off accredited local courses with each new camera sold?

  • Posted on: Updated: Olympus Imaging Business To Be Sold To JIP Inc

Isn't micro 4/3 well established now with many players, certainly at least in the short term JIP is committed to continuing the Olympus Stable of offerings. And presumably they also have plans to take it forward somewhere. I'd not write the product off yet at all. Perhaps it will even become more popular is their cost savings result in lower priced units as well Grin

  • Posted on: Updated: Olympus Imaging Business To Be Sold To JIP Inc

So Olympus branded camera manufacturing won't be owned by Olympus anymore, and a new company and management structure will manufacture the cameras instead as a much leaner organisation to find profit.
The questions then for me are how this new structure can also keep focused development; Also will they make further use of their sony viao links, what will the new distribution channel look like (e.g. Fujifilm going direct ) and what will support be like - support of some 'Brands' is sometimes very weak in other industries.

  • Posted on: Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM Lens Review

Thanks for the review, very interesting and super detail available in the high res images.

" the flatness of field of a zoom lens will not necessarily be anywhere near as good as a dedicated macro lens" I'd not considered this before, nor even knew what it meant - but google says Macro lenses are designed to copy items at close distance with a flat focal plane where the subject edges are proportionally further away from the sensor than the middle of the subject. I assume true macro lenses will have a metric for this measured at their min focal length.

  • Posted on: The Photographers Duel: Can You Take A Better Photo Than A Fellow Photographer?

I love this idea, as if forces you to really investigate whether you are doing the best you can from a situation.
This is where photo walks with a club can really come into its own when you share the photos later.

Heck we could even have a town street ephotozone competition on this idea. e.g. the best 50mm lens photo in April from "Call Ln, Leeds LS1 7BR" Obviously a few comps could run in parallel in different towns. - Choosing a location near transport links may help.
Sponsoring it from a local cafe could be an interesting idea?

To a limited exposure/DOF extent i sometimes also try this with the Auto function on the camera - are my choice of setting better than the cameras.

A canon Link i just got emailed from canon - https://www.canon.co.uk/cameras/eos-r5/ also talks of what seems like a very neat cloud access idea:
    Cloud connected. And then some
Shoot and transfer images and video on the move thanks to built-in Wi-Fi which can link to Canonís brand new image.canon service. Compatible with Auto Image Transfer, EOS R5 allows you to shoot and edit on the move or download automatically to your home computer.

  • Posted on: Canon Announces EOS R5 Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Development With 8K Video Capability

Wow, that's a brief announcement with tantalisingly few details from Canon. It does not look particularly large.
Can't wait to hear the spec list and the price - and even to see how Canon will be positioning this in a road map. The price of the R has dropped quite a bit today, as has the RP.

With the R an then the cheaper RP as a release pair, and now the R5 and a rumoured R6 as another close release pair is this a pattern Canon will be following. and what will Canon do in the High MP arena too? Exciting times for Canon fans.

  • Posted on: Why Use An Electric Viewfinder?

Also you can often set an EVF to show the photo brightness, not just the ambient brightness - making it easier to see the image you are actually creating and also any effects of the filter you might apply - e.g b&W.

Also you can often have the EVF show you the image you have just taken for say 2 seconds, saving you looking away and to the review LCD screen to check the shot - though this is also annoying of you want to see the scene straight after - e.g. if you are shooting action .

On the negative side, EVF are also said to be laggy, only showing you what happened a fraction of a second before, so may not be suitable for fast action shots. Though this is becoming less of an issue with faster EVF's.

  • Posted on: Olympus Micro Four Thirds Lens Roadmap Updated November 2019

Quote:Why do you continue to show 'equivalent' values - anybody who uses Olympus knows about it, FF users are hardly going to be interested in the lenses - totally silly commitment to a factor introduced to help old 35 mm film shooters understand the impact of digital sensors.

I get your point for the die hard fans, but many FF shooters consider downsizing for lighter kit, this helps them when considering the system.
And for me as a generally interested FF photographer it helps me as i forget the actual crop factor is 2.
I've used the 40-150 and loved it, so am excited about a mega reach pro version. In a money no issue world i'd have a m4/3 systems for macro and long reach work as well as my FF for mid range low light.
