Visiting 'The Photography Show' & Coverage For ePz

Hi There,

I'm going to The Photography Show this Saturday the 18th Sept 2021 where I'll be covering the event for ePHOTOzine.

I'm expecting to see lots of new products and ideas from hundreds of exhibitors and perhaps even catch a demo session whilst I'm there - I'll be sharing lots of the cool things I see here, in my blog, so that others can also have a feel for the show and its products as well as see hands-on photos of some new releases.

Do say if you are looking out for anything in particular or if you're going along yourself.

I look forward to updating this blog soon Smile

Olympus again have a massive stand 97593_1631952966.jpg
and loads of cameras to try out including the OM D E-M1X. The newly announced 20mm f1.4 Pro and 40-150mm f4Pro are not yet on the stand but are available in a few weeks and they will send one to ePhotozine as soon as available. 97593_1631953307.jpg

Tamron is very proud to show the latest 18-300 f3.5 to 6.3 aps-c lens.97593_1631954337.jpg
it's nice, light and compact for a zoom of that range. There is a good firm zoom action and a zoom lock button so no lens creep. Zooming out sees the lens extending to get all the way out to 300mm. 97593_1631954556.jpg
. On a Sony body the feel is balanced and focus in the lowlight of the show seems pretty fast. Images on the LCD looked great. Pre-orders are being shipped next week and it's on sale for Sony mount for £679.99. fufi mount is being announced soon.

Let's not forget that a good reason to come to The Photography Show is the discounts on offer. E.g Wex is offering up to 30% on some lines and even has a show trade in zone here to value your kit.97593_1631955301.jpg

Sigma's new 24mm f2 and 90mm f2.8 lenses are beautiful. FF and Aps-c capable and small. Omg the 90mm on a Sony body was beautiful to hold. It's all metal and feels old school excellent. Perhaps the best portrait lens I've held. I can't wait for the ephotozine review on this lens. Paul Renoylds was right to be proud to show these off. Available in l mount for Panasonic, Leica and of course Sigma.

I've also just seen my fav tripod, the vanguard veo 3t carbon fibre with double extending centre column and removable monopod goes to 1.7m. new leg locks are solid and 5 section extension feels Solis and goes down to 41cm. Arca compatible head. Ball head style with optional panning arm that initially looked like a screwdriver on its own. Loved it. Even a blue tooth trigger for mobile phone vloggers. £270 well spent perhaps. Maybe I should sell my old tripod collection and just get this one. It would do me.97593_1631962055.jpg

Canon also had 'affordable' lenses. 16mm f2.8 felt like my nifty fifty plasticity but effective.97593_1631967667.jpg

also the 100to 400mm. 97593_1631967760.jpg

Focus seems pretty fast (r3) though very quick lowish light test. 400mm looked good on the LCD. It's a nice contender.

There are of course LOADS of talks on tons of topics, with action shows on some; others on how to make it as a photographer; or others on particular techniques. I thought I would stop at this one to see that 'everyone can do fine art photography' and see if I could pick up any hints. Some stands also had models which made them very popular. Fuji had a fine Venitian styled couple in the spotlight, I hope I can paste image later.

H&Y showed me a neat magnetic filter system with a thumbwheel controlled cpl that then with a holder added gorilla glass grad and Nd filters. Me confidentiality bashed the glass on the stand and it was all fine and undamaged. Very cool.97593_1631973050.jpg

Hi there, Just thought i'd share some other highlights I came across - Lens Rentals - Yes for me this is interesting - Not sure on a new lens - well hire it and try it out - there are lots of companies looking to do this with you - heck Canon might even do something for free with you. Have a look at a company called "Lens Pimp" or even "lenses for Hire" as below97593_1631999257.jpg

Remember if you are a canon shooter - 97593_1631999329.jpg

ALso if your are going along look out for interesting people and models to shoot. Fuji has a lovely couple and a big backdrop/scene company had a few too.97593_1631999451.jpg
97593_1631999469.jpg

Also look out for the amazing Natasha J Bella, a Beautiful, talented business minded UK model with her own stand at the show. What she showed the modelling & photographic community is amazing resourcefulness with remote shoots - Covid locks us all down and instead of losing her regular income stream she goes online and sets up for remote shoots from her home studio. Better than this she runs professional well supported training sessions for photographers and other models on how to do this. I'd wager there were thousands more remote shoots during lockdown directly because of her, that's thousand more people keeping their business/photography passion going when otherwise everyone was isolated and down. Almost a public service for some. 97593_1631999910.jpg

There are loads of talks spread across 4+ general theatres, and perhaps as many again in the camera makers theatres. The only talk i went to was by Simon McCheung encouraging us all to consider what a fine art photographer was and how we might want to do this ourselves. He outlined his journey and approach to this area - it started with a 365 project of self portraits with a surreal feel and minimal background distractions. he then goes on to define each image from 5 key Image considerations.
Imagination - describing how he imagines the picture will look to him and the viewer, perhaps anchoring it to a cinematic style or image genre.
Aesthetes - the presentation style of the image
Intellectual Content - The shared reason for the scene and what it means to the viewer - even based around activism
Symbolisms - the pictorial elements that will convey the message you are giving
Moods/Emotions - how you want the viewer to feel about the image.
Surreal and Photoshop can feature heavily in these images so might this be a genre for your to try?

From Surreal concepts to Concept Cameras from Canon.
Canon was looking for feedback from the public about a few camera ideas, the first was what I'm calling the Social Camera. This camera is designed to let you join in the memory making of groups and events - how often are you the photographer and excluded from all family/friend images because of it - well this little chap below can sit down in the action and track around looking to capture all involved - including you - then download the images to your Phone for you to share. It actually could be great for weddings and parties etc for all ages. 97593_1632001545.jpg

Or maybe the tiny pocket sides video cam that you just hold to you shoulder to shoot real time video of where you are and zoom up to 300mm 97593_1632001714.jpg
.

Then there is the idea of the Work posture monitor - some companies take employee working posture very seriously, when this device does not record traditional images, instead it detects your posture near a PC or laptop. Perhaps a bit like a heart rate monitor. it can then warn you to take a break or sit up straight etc. Of course if could also say if you were always up making another cup of tea and prevaricating.
97593_1632001983.jpg

OK its not photography but is still an image based device.

One of the theatres was an action zone challenging you to capture fast moving images in low light, courtesy of Fusion_Extreme - not an ideal equipment set for me but my trusty 6d ISO on ISO12800 with a 70-300 mm got these images which was a bit of fun Smile 97593_1632002272.jpg

Sony was also right in the middle of the show and I got to see a very slick and encouraging set of equipment and had a play with a few models even trying my canon lenses on Sony Camera's with a Sony adapter. There is much to like for me about Sony but I'd really need to be given a strong equipment setup and a month to use it before saying I felt familiar with it, Its nice and small and light though. At least until you put the longer lenses on it. 97593_1632002854.jpg
