Painted Ceilling

Thank you to everyone who has taken an interest in my pictures and given your support. This is anouther in my series of the Lady Chapel at Chichester Cathedral and is a detail of the painted ceiling taken whilst restoration work was in progress.
Bishop Sherborne (1508 - 36) commissioned Lambert Barnard to paint all the ceilings. They are believed to have been painted in the mid 1530's. Most of the painting was scrubbed off by the Victorians when doing "restoration work". This and a small area in the South Aisle are all that remain. It is believed that this area was saved because the library had been moved here at the time and the books made this area inaccessible.

Such delicate and beautful work. How sad to learn it was largely distroyed and I suppose we have to be thankful that library was stored at that end!

Quick update:

Believe it or not the ceilings were scrubbed clean by the Victorians as part of their restoration work.
