Stained glass - Peterborough Cathedral

By James_C
Good morning to you all,

Thank you very much for your terriffic response to my last upload. It is very much appreciated.

Today is the turn for one of the stained glass windows in "the new building" (added between 1438 and 1528). The original stained glass windows were destroyed along with much else by Cromwell's soldiers, who "put to rights" or, in common parlance, wrecked the cathedral when Cromwell visited Peterborough whilst on route to besiege Crowland.

I hope you enjoy these. V2 is the original photograph of the whole window and Vs 1, 3,4 & 5 are detailed crops from that original.

I hope you enjoy these. Thanks for looking.

Best regards,

A great set, did you stand on a ladder to get them so level?

Hi Clifford,

Quote:A great set, did you stand on a ladder to get them so level?

No I didn't. I used rotate and then perspective tools in GIMP, which is a free download, to straighten and then correct the perspective. I would have needed about a 20 foot ladder otherwise. Some of my pictures taken at Chichester Cathedral were taken from step ladders or scaffolding, but then I am heavily involved with Chichester Cathedral and am often asked to do that sort of thing. Here is a link to the appropriate album.

All the best,

Thanks for the reply James, you have some great stuff in your set. The tools in Gimp seem to work very well

An excellent set of record shots of the windows - some piece of work - it makes you wonder with the size how they designed, made it and installed it

Quote:I have always felt that stained-glass windows are a forgotten art form that should get a lot more interest as they are magnificent works of art, and they are all around us yet we never see them because the vast majority of the population never go to churches.

I heartily agree with you Malc

It certainly is quite a feat. I know that at Chichester Catheral, when they undertook the extensive restoration of the Lady Capel , removing the stained glass for restoration was a major, and very expensive, problem. I am quite sure it was a major expenditure, because of the complexity, then too Ray.
