The High Alter - Peterborough Cathedral

By James_C
Good morning all,

It is Sunday again and so I thought another, closer, look at the imposing High Alter at Peterborough Cathedral would be in order. The high alter, rearados, stained glass, cloisters and Lady Chapel were all destroyed by the parliamentarians during the civil war. Some repairs were carried out during the 17th and 18th centuries, but the main restoration work wasn't started until 1883 when John Loughborough Pearson supervised a complete rebuild of the interior pillars, choir and west front. This work included the high altar, the marble pavement leading to the high alter, and the hand-carved choir stalls, cathedra (bishop's throne) and choir pulpit.

In answer to saltireblue's querry the Saltire marks the spot where Mary Queen of Scots was buried in 1587. Her body was removed to Westminster Abbey in 1612. She had been imprisoned, tried and executed at nearby Fotheringhay Castle.

Many thanks for the wonderful c+c on my last upload. It is always appreciated. I hope you enjoy this one Thanks for looking.

Best regards,

James

Exceptional indoor photography-- Amazing how you have brilliant light on the alter, the supporting shapes still clear in the shadows!

great tones and good light with his shot.
I must say photography broadens your view and i have found myself looking more at church's and cathedrals as they tend to be very fascinating and this one is also.
Thx for sharing.
