Purely Elemental

By JamesAppleton
Earth, Water, Air and Fire.

I stood for an hour and a half up to my knees in glacial water waiting for this shot, and was shaking like a leaf when I finally crawled back out across the shallower parts of the falls. I've wanted to visit this location for years, but only had this idea on reaching the spot - getting in very close and fairly low to shoot nothing but the basic elements...

This is a four-shot pano stitch, all vertical. ND grads kept everything in check.

I like this very much indeed. The only slight niggle is the brightness in the water leading out of the left - but I can imagine it must have been hard to expose for all those different volumes and speeds of water flows. Terrific low angle composition.

its bad enough standing in our local rocky tumbling stream knee deep getting water shots so i can empathise with you on this,
it needed this beautiful sky to take it into the magical catagory and the shivering has paid off. the sky / water balance has been handled very delicately too and shows your technical ability, it would have been so easy to blow this one out and come back with nothing.

Cheers everyone - all comments are much appreciated! The bottom left brighter water is the deeper channel of the fall's run-off, and is a mind-blowing shade of blue, it's brighter due to thousands of trapped air bubbles sifting along within the turbulence. Search for bruarfoss on google and you'll see other examples. I'd love it if nature had set itself up for a perfect photograph, but this is as the waterfall was, and I'm not changing that reality for the sake of technical/compositional perfection.

I was here just a few weeks ago. I should have got my fishing waders out. Next time you are in Iceland, you could maybe give me a call, we could go on a jeep trip.
