Soul Asylum

By JamesBurns
Sunderland Borough Asylum was completed in 1895 to a design by GT Hine, an architect known in the era for revolutionising the layout of hospitals caring for the mentally ill. Situated on the coast, it was not uncommon for asylums to be located away from major population centres - both because the fresh air was believed to have curative properties, but also to insulate the community at large from any possible disturbances.

The main building of this particular hospital closed in 1998 and has since fallen into disrepair. Since this image was taken in 2006, there have been a number of fires within the building, which is now scheduled for demolition, pending redevlopment of the site.

Great B&W image here, First thought myself was St Marys at Stannington, but I guess they all must have the same feel about them. Cracking title too.
