  • The lake by jameswburke

Thanks AnthonyH - it works well when there's no sky interest in landscape shots.

  • Estuary by jameswburke

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. It's a very atmospheric place with the sound of the surf in the distance and seabird calls from the mudflats. I don't take many shots per outing and spend a good bit of time post-processing my favourites.

  • Estuary No.2 by jameswburke

Thanks Alan. It's not a 'one click' solution but takes a bit of editing, dodging and burning to make subtle lighting effects with some High Pass / Soft Light selective sharpening. The vintage lens I used also gives more of a 3D depth to pictures than my modern 50mm lenses.

  • Ocean's edge, New Year's Day 2020 by jameswburke

Thanks SlowSong. I really like the effect and it makes something striking out of dull conditions.

I have this lens for my Sony A7iii. I love the way you can lock the aperture on the lens (can be over ridden). Superb optics from wide open. Lightweight too, so very portable. Writing this in 2022, so there are a few used ones on MPB if you want to save a bit of money. Once again Sony has been more imaginative than the big dslr makers.

  • Posted on: Asahi Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 Review

I've been trying my old Pentax manual lenses on my Canon 5D bodies for a while now. They are sharp, lightweight and give a more 3D look to images. I recently bought a vintage 50mm f4 Macro which is my carry-around lens now. The lens is set deep in the body so no flare. I've also been using a lovely 50mm f1.7 Pentax SMC lens which I got with my Pentax ME Super, way back in 1982 - a lovely lens with very nice bokeh. All these lenses require manual exposure and focus but that shouldn't be an obstacle. If you want excellent lenses at budget prices with a retro look for your pics then Pentax SMC lenses are perfect.
