Dobratsch

By Jasper87
Many thanks for your response to my previous image of Lake Bled in Slovenia. This is Dobratsch, a 7,106ft mountain in Carinthia, Austria, taken just after sunset.

Devout worshipers built the two highest churches in the eastern Alps on the summit of the Dobratsch to commemorate a miracle. According to legend, a shepherd and his flock were caught in a severe thunderstorm in 1482 when the Virgin Mother appeared and saved them from certain death.

Afterwards the summit became a cult site where the (German) miners from Bleiberg built the "German Church" in 1692. The Gail Valley's "Windisch" (Slovenian) population followed suit in 1690 and built the "Slovenian Church" 300 meters to the west to thank the Virgin Mother for healing a deaf and dumb boy. The two mountain churches still attract pilgrims to this day.

Iso 100, f10, 0.8secs, @150mm. Remote release and a tripod with rather lethal 4" spikes on the feet!

A tripod that wears crampons... that's something different to mount your camera on!

Good photo, nicely composed, but too heavy on the blue for me. Also I think it looks better with a bit of a lift in Levels... that gives a subtle glow to the light on the end of the church.

(So how did you get up there... helicopter?)

Cheers, Alan, it was a 'blue hour' photo - the sun had set. Version uploaded as suggested but still prefer the blue one as it suggests the time of day better, although ideally there would have been a golden glow from the church window to emphasise the time.

Landscape photography is a very subjective genre... that's the fascination and the beauty of it. Those who maintain it should only ever be a strictly accurate record of a scene are missing the point.
Cheers mate.

Wonderful stories about the churches.
Stunning image Dave - prefer V2 with more light.
(You were right about my recent image being too blue - reedited and looking better)
The shape of the church AND those of the snow clad mountains is breath taking.
