A curious mix of neglect and care. They have a problem there, a volunteer explained it to us recently. A lot of the machinery actually belongs to supporters with whom they have lost touch - and they cannot restore things without the owners' permission. That's why some things are crumbling away.

Thank you for the info Moira. On my last visit to Tanfield a volunteer told me that one ex-member had bought three Stephenson engines, then died, so the engines are still standing there untouched. the volunteer's accent was so broad Geordie I could scarcely understand what he was saying.
