A tree in the field. The sun is behind the tree and the field is empty.

I like the simplicity of this image. For me the composition is spot on. The sky and clouds are interesting and fairly dramatic.
I've done two mod where I have darkened the high lights which make the sky a bit more dramatic and sharpened a little which improves the contrast of the tree against the sky. On my second mod I cloned out the bush at the left hand side.
I would have used a smaller aperture and slower speed although everything looks in the same focus. Generally the best part of a lens is around f5.6 to f11.

When I have an image like this, I always use the Golden Crop script, available from Adobe, to crop and place the subject in the frame for the best results.

The mod I have posted demonstrates what I mean.

There's something emotionally very powerful about a single, bare tree against an empty landscape. I like this a lot, the only changes I would make would be to crop off the smaller background tree on the left, which reduces the loneliness of the main tree, and clone out a distracting bright detail on the right - on the line where the middle ground meets distant view. Not sure what it is, maybe a vehicle.
Then I would look at a square crop, and possibly also b&w.

And it's raining in the background. A nice shot but not sure why you used f2.8? Would have come down just a couple of stops for lens quality.
