i purchased a nikon 3100 two weeks ago and have been getting acustomed to it.
to my delight the e series nikkor lenses i have had for some 25 years from when i had a nikon FG20 film camera fit the f baoynet, although all the functions have to be done manually.

this was taken in my garden with the 50mm f1.8 lens attached to a tokina 2x teleconverter
im sure you can get similar results wuth the 18 - 55mm vr lens that comes with the camera but i wanted to see what results i could get with these old lenses - not bad for 25 year old glass
