THE HOLY MAN OF PO NAGAR CHAM TOWERS

By JN_CHATELAIN_PHOTOGRAPHY
The Po Nagar Cham towers are about two kilometers North of Nha Trang, on a hill overlooking the Song Cai river and port (have a look at yesterday’s upload and you’ll see the towers on the hill). They were built between the VIIth and XXIIth centuries on a site that had been used for Hindu worship since IIth century.

The largest and most impressive of the towers is about 23-metre high, built in 817AD and is dedicated to Bhagavati/ Po Yang Inu Nagar (Goddess Mother of the Kingdom).

This wonderful gentleman was standing in front of the door of the main tower and let the tourists snap happily before walking away carrying his stick on his shoulder (f9 1/100th sec zoom at 70mm slight crop). He was a great sight and brought to me the link between today’s Vietnam and its ancient history.

I tried to find the signification of the stick but got no answer. If you know anything about the Balamom (Hindu) Cham people please pass it on as I really would like to know. Thanks.

Many thanks for the votes and comments on Nha Trang’s port. V1 is my favourite version but I also like V3 because of the boat in the foreground.

Have a nice evening,
Jean-Noël
