VIETNAM 2013 #113

This temple is dedicated to Nguyen Trung Truc, who was a leader of the resistance in the 1860s against the French Colonial forces who had recently arrived in the Mekong region.

The first temple was a simple building with a thatched roof. It has been rebuilt several times and enlarged. The latest building work was done between 1964 and 1970.

Among Nguyen Trung Trucís exploits were the raid which resulted in the destruction of the French warship Esperance. In mid-1868, he again led a successful attack on the French fortress at KiÍn Giang in Rạch GiŠ.

The French made repeated attempts to capture him but failed until 1868, when the they took his mother and some civilians hostage and threatened to kill them if he did not surrender. Nguyen Trung Truc turned himself in and was executed by the French in the marketplace of Rach Gia on 27 October 1868.
Today, he continues to be revered. Many people come to the temple and leave offerings.

On Saturday August 3rd 2013, according to Viet News, his house became a memorial:

ďHero Nguyen Trung Truc's memorial house inaugurated

KIEN GIANG (VNS)ó A memorial house to commemorate hero Nguyen Trung Truc (1839-68) was inaugurated on Saturday in Rach Gia city, after one year of construction.

The 250sq.m house located in Kien Giang province was designed as a temple and displays memorabilia, documents and images to honour the hero's personality and career as a leader of many uprisings against the French invaders, in the south of Viet Nam.

Truc and his troops occupied were responsible for rescuing many southern provinces from enemy control. When the French sentenced him to death, his last words "if the French eradicated all grass on our land then we, Vietnamese people, would stop fighting against them" have been immortalised in Viet Nam's history.
Artefacts and objects displayed throughout the house paint a vivid picture of history and allow visitors to gain an insight into this important figure who was renowned for his spirited patriotism.-VNSĒ
