VIETNAM 2013 #144

By JN_CHATELAIN_PHOTOGRAPHY
Somewhere on the way to Tram Chim National Park in the Mekong Delta region, this man was casting a fishing net in a river by the road. On other occasions, I had seen other people do it but I was never near enough or in the right position.

The net is circular with small weights around its edge. It is cast by hand in such a way that it spreads out on the water and sinks. The fish are caught as the fisherman is hauling the net back in.

This type of net has been used for thousands of years in Vietnam and many other countries. Fishing this way is very effective for catching small fish.
