VIETNAM 2013 #49

By JN_CHATELAIN_PHOTOGRAPHY
The start of a new series about Phung Hiep floating market.

The Vietnamese call the Mekong Delta their ‘rice basket’, but these fertile flatlands produce much more than rice. Plenty of coconuts, mangoes, pineapple, durians, bananas, sugar cane and more are grown there.

The market lasts all day long, but it is at its most busy and interesting in early morning. The precious evening and throughout the night, boats from far-and-wide, full of seasonal vegetables, fruits, pigs, snakes ...etc... head for Phung Hiep a small village in the Mekong Delta.

Boats of all shapes and sizes are gathering there. Some boats are covered with roofs, some are not. On boats without roofs, the sellers have to hold high a bamboo stick hanging with fruits as signals of the goods they are selling. The signal to buy is a whistling or waving band.

Market-goers look at the good from their own boat and sometimes stumble from boat to boat in search of what they want. They do not bargain, just an exchange of a few words and the deal is done and money changes hands

When I arrived it was dark and the “shoppers” were looking at the fruit and veg with their torches.

Some fruit will be bought and then be transported in a large boat to fruit-processing factories or to Ho Chi Minh City, even to Hanoi and Northern provinces or sold in local markets.

I have read about this floating market, and this is a lovely introduction to what I'm sure will be a most interesting series.

A well-shaped silhouette against the warm reflected light on the water.
