St KILDA

By JN_CHATELAIN_PHOTOGRAPHY
St Kilda is a suburb of Melbourne (Victoria, Australia), 6 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District.

St Kilda was named after a schooner Lady of St Kilda (which moored at the main beach for much of 1841) by Charles La Trobe and the ship's master and early settler Lieutenant James Ross Lawrence.

During the Edwardian and Victorian eras, St Kilda became a favoured suburb of Melbourne's elite, and many palatial mansions were constructed along its hills and waterfront.

Things changed during the Depression of the 1890s. Many wealthy families had lost much of their fortunes and several of the large mansions were subdivided for apartment or boarding-house accommodation. Not well off people moved in and the wealthy moved to more exclusive suburbs such as Brighton, South Yarra and Toorak.

Things changed again with the arrival of the cable tram line. The seaside area became a popular entertainment precinct for Melbourne's working classes. Carlo Catani (Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department), in 1906, improved St Kilda's foreshore. This resulted in the famous leisure precinct: Dreamland amusement park, St Kilda Sea Baths, Luna Park, Palais de Danse, Palais Theatre, St Moritz Ice Rink.

In the Sixties, St Kilda became one of the city's main bohemian area. Artists, musicians settled there. It was also known as the red light district area of Melbourne where drugs and crimes were rife. Tourists were told to avoid the area.

Today, St Kilda is quite attractive with a nice beach, cafés and restaurants. It’s also a great place for a view on Melbourne’s skyline.
