Bomb Shelters

By Joeblowfromoz
Another days drive yesterday, when we thought the day was going to be kind to us, but it turned really cold and the clouds rolled in and it was just freezing. The wind was blowing straight off the South Pole.

Not a bad day for photography, but on the way home we found these old Bomb Shelters, that were built at Port Gibbon, towards the end of the second world war. However, peace was declared before they were finished and they were sold off to private enterprise for the princely sum of 10 pounds each. Still in amazing condition and this is 3 of the 5 that are there. Lucky enough to get the last of a rainbow in the shot.

Thanks for all your support and hope you are all having a good weekend.

I just googled these huts and all I could find was this.

So apparently there were 2 towers there and they were what was sold for 10 pound. There was no information at the site, but asking the locals that was what we were told..

Thanks to everyone that has messaged me with interest in these - much appreciated

Rather appealing buildings, Jo, well composed and captured with that touch of a rainbow in the sky. Carol

Hey Jo (there's a song title in there somewhere!) sorry to hear it was a cold day! A very evocative image on the one hand the reminders of war, on the other the rainbow signifying peace... An excellent composition.... Sorry about the pun at the beginning!

Hiya Jo, love this image, they are not Nissen Huts though, Althoigh they are of
The same style. Nissen huts, designed by a Captain Nissen, were concrete ended, covered in tin sheet and were designed to be covered in sandbags. These are
Superb. Two were built as lookout towers with 132 foot towers, are these still there or have the towers been shortened?

Just to let our friend know, it is Nissen hut, not a bad price for a tenner, but peace was declared and reminder remains.. Peter

Living as a child in South London during the last war Jo this brought back a lot of memories for me. Like most people we had a shelter in the garden but it was not at all roomy and airy like this !!
