When we were down in West Cork last August I headed off one evening in search of an impromptu musical session that I might join. At Lowertown just outside Schull I came across a fiddler playing on the roadside for a platform dance. I put a bit of rosin on the bow and joined in. We had great craic. As we played, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the statue of the Virgin Mary across the road discreetly tapping her foot. Anyone familiar with the moving statues phenomenon in West Cork during the 1980s will know exactly what I'm talking about.
