The Old Quay

By JohnEW
The harbour watchtower near the Old Quay at Whitehaven, Cumbria, was erected around 1730 & according to a nearby plaque provided by the Whitehaven Civic Society in 1971, was "used for general surveillance of sailing vessels in the harbour. The Old Quay was the port's first pier, of late 17th century foundation, with historic associations including the John Paul Jones raid in 1778 - the last invasion of England."

More of Mr Jones in later photos! This shot was taken on 14 Aug a couple of weeks ago, an hour or two before the rain arrived in earnest. Before anyone mentions it, no the flagpoles were not vertical, nor was the tower perfectly straight either, I suspect Wink.

The photomatix-style processing you've applied works perfectly on this subject, as does the low viewpoint. A delightful result, that deserves far more attention...

Thanks for c&C folks. Sorry for my lack of interaction, back in Devon for a few days (oh no, more boat pics. Sad) followed by Cumbria next week (on no, more mountains!).

Large is superb. Fine textures and colour nuances in the stone, beautiful composition.
