Expect the unexpected

By Johnnybairdphotography
During our time in Iceland we weren’t expecting any crazy aurora; we did see a few small shows but the sun was rather quiet all week. A few days prior to this image the sun spat out a small coronal mass ejection (CME), but NASA writ it off as insignificant and likely wouldn’t hit earth.
After wrapping up a sunset at one of Iceland’s most iconic mountains, Vestrahorn, I took a look at the Space weather in the vain hope of something to come that night. I couldn’t believe it when I seen that an interplanetary shock (the first impact of a plasma cloud that hits Earth’s magnetosphere, causing it to compress) had been detected, though barely noticeable in the data. I turned to my mum and said we needed to be back for dark, which meant checking into the accommodation, skipping dinner, and returning to Vestrahorn.
I had hoped that we would both get a great show that night, and her first proper aurora experience. Though the CME was small, and of limited impact, the plasma cloud had a strong magnetic field – right from the onset of darkness we experienced some fantastic aurora. And, we virtually had the whole place to ourselves … on heard of for Vestrahorn. Car lights eventually did begin to shine, and people arrived, but soon left as the aurora had died down. We waited it out for a few hours, eating our camping food, knowing that it was only a matter of time before we got show number 2 of the night.
