"SkyFall" - Perseid Meteor Shower 2017

By Johnnybairdphotography
Iím a bit late to the party with my Perseid meteor shower image, but it took some serious time to piece it together, putting the computerís hard drive through its paces. Much of the time was spent loading files and trawling through the 1700 plus images captured over a 5-hour period (late Saturday night through to Sunday morning.)

It was a great wee show, despite the moonís impact, and I was pleased to find I had captured about 60 meteors, along with a few smaller ones I ignored. It is always a pleasure to shoot these kinds of events - once the cameras are set up it is a sit back and enjoy the show affair, with a few stunners breaking the atmosphere.

As meteors are vaporized, some of the brighter ones display their colours due to their composition and entry velocity. If you look closely you can spot some green and pink/magenta in some of the more prominent meteors. As particles are excited, light is emitted at a wavelength characteristic for that element Ė nickel produces the green colour.

This final image consists of 40 images stacked for the background stars to reduce noise, selected meteors captured were then blended into the image. A long exposure was also taken for the foreground and blended into the final image. No meteors were moved in post production, the camera was not moved at any time Ė all meteors in the final image fell as they did. Shot using the NiSi Natural light filter. I was running a dual camera set up, so on to the second camera soon and through another 2000 or so images. Yay, happy days.

M award for perseverance, the excellent technical description of the process and I like the final result. Me, I just sat in a chair and watched for half an hour, then went to bed having seen 10 meteors!
