Loch Avon

By JohnParminter
The view along Loch avon towards Carn Echtachan and the Shelter Stone Crag.

I can't say that I am all that inspired by the Cairngorms and for me this area is probably the most interesting, it may not say much about the rest of the hills in this area.......

I like the cloud tipping down over the mountain at the end of the loch and also the light on the nearer hill. That effect with cloud gets to me every time. There is quite a lot of foreground with rather flat light, and if you were not bothered about getting the whole loch you could crop some of that out, I guess?

The combination of the light and dark make this an outstanding image for me.

Indeed Sue, I could do that. I'll leave the dull, flat-light ground in though just to emphasise how I feel about the Cairngorms....

More hostile in the winter John, love the patchwork light.

Very true Ron and perhaps more appealing as well, to me anyway.

Thanks all,

I quite like the image, it's a shame you were there in such dull lighting. As someone who lives locally I must say it's a challenge to get them looking good! Although since I lack the free time to venture far into the cairngorm range for photography, they're usually a backdrop rather than the main subject of my images. Winter helps, the snow enhances the modelling of the land and also makes them seem the height (above sea level) they actually are. They are very moody mountains though, and can be blanketed in cloud for days on end so to get the most out of them you have to be either lucky or spending a lot of time in them... I suspect you won't be judging by your comments! Grin

Thanks Al. I actually don't mind the lighting in this one, it was appropriate for what I intend the image for. I agree that it is quite hard to make the Cairngorms look good or more appealing and winter does help.
I guess I am comparing them with other areas such as Cuillin, Torridon, Assynt and most of the west coast which is a bit unfair I suppose as they do have a character of their own but I do find it hard to motivate myself to venture into them if I had a choice of say the Mamores or Glen Shiel ridge for example.

Anyway I have now achieved the images I set out to capture for the book so I can turn my back on them for now and I won't be sad at not having to trudge up Cairn Gorm again from the Ski centre......

You have managed to record real subtlety of light here John. Its no big impact shot but has a quiet beauty.

Thanks Derek, you have affirmed my opinion of it as well.

Cheers.

The Gorms do have their own character John (as you no doubt know) I love them and in winter they can be very challenging indeed Smile Lovely understated photo
