A Quick Makeover for Frankie

I always ask Hayley, my hair stylist, if I should try a new style and for some reason she always falls into fits of laughter. She's obviously never heard of Photoshop. The spurious connection here is the little known fact that Frankie Valli was at one time a hairdresser and used to (maybe still does) cut the hair for some of the guys in the band. We don't actually have Frankie here, but we do have a very old but significant print of an image I shot in 1980. The story is on yesterday's EPZ picture, but to recap he had been trying out moving into the auditorium at the afternoon sound check and, sure enough, at the evening performance he headed straight down to us and knelt in front of our friends' young daughter and sang part of a song to her. I madly scrabbled for my Pentax MX and he was kind enough to wait long enough for me to get just one shot.

Now, many years later, negative badly damaged by water and mould and only the print left, I have done my best with it and restored it in Photoshop. The original is a 10" x 8" on matt Agfa paper, printed by me in my home darkroom. It's been well received on EPZ and also by my old and new Four Seasons friends, which is great. The spot healing tool was very useful, along with painstaking cloning. Then some adjustment of levels to get a good black and the end result is close to what was presented to my camera. There was a spotlight picking out Frankie and it was shooting straight into my camera, so the SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 lens has done exceptionally well.

One good thing about Lockdown is that we're getting round to all sorts of things that have been put off and put off and it's also given us a chance to share them. Now I just have to wait for Lockdown to end and I can go and torment my hair stylist again......
