As mentioned yesterday, we were exploring Leigh Cemetery and came across what is beginning to look like the obligitory neglected chapel. This time, however, the doors were obligingly left open as the chapel is used for storage and presumably people were working in the grounds. These chapels are always tantalising, all locked up and leaving us wondering what's inside. We arranged to go inside the two chapels at Atherton Cemetery some years ago, but this one was there for the taking.
I was using the Nikon Coolpix 4300, but this was not really up to interior shots, so I used the Pentax MX-1 that travels everywhere with me. The building was fascinating, with a gorgeous ceiling inside. The condition was generally sound, but there are starting to be missing tiles and bricks and defects in the structure that clearly are not being attended to. It's a lovely building, with some incredible brickwork, and it's a tragedy to let it start to slip away. As it stands it would take relatively little to get it back up to scratch. We enjoyed looking at it but it does make us feel a bit wistful as we can see it beginning to decay.
