When we were shooting images for the "Images of England" project for English Heritage we learned quite a few things. One of these was to pull our eyes upwards, look up at what there was, look over the top of all those flashy shops. Because over them is so much architecture and there is so much history just lying there, slowly decaying away. It fascinates me and I always feel I want to go and explore all those dusty, abandoned offices, open doors onto long neglected roofs, share the space for a moment with all those small trees growing out of the nooks and crannies of the old city.
It is the old city we are looking at, and a surprising amount survives in the smaller side streets and ginnels. In particular I look at Manchester because it's closest and I routinely have time to spare there. Today I shot just three images on this theme, but in the longer term there are plenty more in my archive, and plenty more left to shoot. So Look Up, Look Over and discover the story of the city's past.
